Thwarts add strength and stiffness to your canoe. Canoes 14ft to 15ft long generally have a yoke in the center plus one thwart.
Canoes 16ft or greater will have two thwarts in addition to the yoke. Made one at a time with a durable finish. We start with 1" thick select ash stock, trimmed and finished by hand to 7/8" thickness.
-
Solid Ash wood with a clear, UV-resistant, varnish finish.
- Made in USA
- Any of these thwarts are easily trimmed to fit your exact canoe perfectly - just seal the cut end with exterior polyurethane or varnish.
- Choose a straight profile thwart OR a shaped profile thwart.
Shaped Thwarts:
Our most popular 36 inch length may has a shaped profile with a sealed square end cut. (this is our un-trimmed size so it may be a bit more than 36".) You can easily trim this to any length and cut angle for a perfect fit your canoe. Length: 36" Width: 2 5/8" Thickness: 7/8" Weight: @ 27 ounces.
The 32.5 inch Thwart is measured to the longest point (ends are angled). The 32.5 inch thwart is the only size in use by Old Town today. We stock 34.5 inch, 32.5 inch and 32 inch sizes for Old Town canoes in our Heavy Duty Thwart.
Most models use a shaped or contour thwart (from overhead view). The 26.5 inch, 29.25 inch, 32 inch, 32.5 inch and 34.5 inch Thwarts are measured to the longest point (ends are angled).
Our 32, 32.5 and 34.5 inch lengths have the classic shaped profile and a sealed tapered end cut for many Old Town Canoes and other brands.
Our Mad River thwart has a square end cut, classic shaped profile -very popular since it can can easily be cut to fit perfectly in so many models. Length: 39" Width: 2 5/8" Thickness: 7/8" Weight: @ 26 ounces.
Straight Thwarts:
Our Straight thwart may also be used in the center of a canoe, or either side of center. Our 33.5 inch, 36 inch and 41 inch lengths are wider and have a straight profile, rounded edges and a sealed end cut. These are easily trimmed at any length and cut angle to perfectly fit your canoe. We use this straight thwart as a base when mounting gear tracks and rod holder tracks since it has a broader surface than factory issued thwarts with a shaped profile. The Tripper XL used 40" and 33.5" Thwarts with a straight profile.
Our 41 inch straight thwart has a square end cut -very popular since it can easily be cut to fit perfectly in so many models. Length: 41" Width: 2 5/8" Thickness: 7/8" Weight: @ 26 ounces.
Old Town Pack, Pack Angler and Discovery 119 models may use either a 26.5 or 29.25 inch thwart. These slender thwarts have a straight profile with an angled end cut. Overall Length: 29 1/4" (or 26.5") Width: 2 5/8" Thickness: 7/8" Weight: @ 18 to 19 ounces.
Not sure? order our Heavy Duty Thwart in a a longer size than you need and cut it down to the exact length and cut angle needed to perfectly fit Your canoe. Seal the end cut with exterior polyurethane or marine varnish.
