The Huron 15 is perfect for wilderness explorers or families looking for an indestructible canoe that will hold its shape and give you confidence for many years on the water. Whether gliding across back country lakes or cruising remote rivers, the Huron 15 is perfect for your next on-water adventure.
When the wind picks up later in the day it’s lower profile will offer improved tracking and control. Made out of T-Formex Lite, for our lightest 15 with improved portaging and cartopping at the end of a long day on the water.
The Huron 15 is pulled from the same mold as the Prospecteur 15, but we trim it down to 12.5”, as opposed to 14.5”. This lower profile reduces weight quite a bit and also makes it much easier to paddle in breezy conditions, either solo or tandem.
Huron or Prospecteur... This is mostly a how heavy you are willing to carry debate. Best done by lifting each one and being honest with yourself. We're still waiting for the customer that comes back to tell us, "That they wish their canoe was heavier." No solo paddlers are not heavy enough, or take enough gear to worry about overloading the depth of the Huron. We just don't see them pushing it down in the water very much. Most of them however will wish they had a lighter weight canoe as this year turns into next year and the year after. Bonafide rapids is the situation where you would want extra depth. Another would be an XXL guys loaded with gear. However, that extra depth is considered to be a bad thing on a lake, being more sail area for the wind, and more weight on the portage. Our best advice is to focus as much as possible on what you'll be dealing with 80 or 90 percent of the time, and not get too side-tracked with things that might happen once or twice per year. Either version will have the thoughtfully designed hull shape to be very capable in swift waters or rapids, without sacrificing glide and tracking you want for slower rivers and lakes.
The Huron 15 is ideal for canoe trippers and recreational canoeists who want a rugged canoe for versatile paddling on lakes or rivers, but who don’t need the extra depth, capacity, sail area, or weight of the Prospecteur 15.
The Huron 15 is available in T-former LITE, for Very good durability and lighter weight all in one great canoe. LITE models have a lighter hull, as well as lighter gunwales, lighter seats and lighter thwarts.
While less robust compared to the original T-formex, the LITE version is still Much less likely to crack when compared the most rugged options from Swift or NovaCraft. When compared to other canoe materials, T-formex LITE is VERY light and portable, yet provides much more durability. In our experience T-formex LITE slides over shallow rocky areas with much less damage than composite canoes, including those costing 3X more!
